THE campaign to find a match for a six-year-old boy from Newport who needs a life-saving bone marrow transplant got a boost at the weekend as 157 more donors signed up at an event at Rodney Parade.

Marley Nicholls, of Bettws, suffers from a rare blood condition called aplastic anaemia and doctors have said without a transplant he may not live more than a few more years.

Thousands have signed the marrow and stem cell donor register since his family set up the Marrow for Marley campaign - but so far no match has been found.

At the campaign team were on hand at Rodney Parade ahead of the Dragons' clash with Cardiff Blues signing up more donors.

All potential donors had to do is swab the inside of their cheeks and mouth - with rest handled by the campaign team.

Among those to sign up were Gareth Skelding, of Bedwas, and Gethyn Mills, of Bargoed.

Mr Mills said: "I read about it a few weeks ago and thought I had to get involved.

"It's a perfect opportunity to help out."

Argus reporter Ian Craig also signed up to the register at the event.

He said: "To think Marley is going through such a battle at only six years old is desperately unfair, and it wasn't hard to take a couple of minutes to do my bit.

"The chance I'm a match might be low, but the more people join the register the greater the chance they'll find someone who can help."
