A THEATRICAL production about a political love story will debut in Abertillery next week.

Theatr na nÓg’s production, Nye and Jennie, will begin its tour of Wales and Scotland at Metropole Cultural and Conference Centre (The Met), in Abertillery, on October 17.

This tour coincides with celebrations of 70 years of the NHS, with the production based on the relationship of NHS founder, Aneurin Bevan, and Baroness, Jennie Lee, who were married in 1934.

This poetic play earned writer, Meredydd Barker, a nomination for Best Playwright at the Welsh Theatre Awards 2017.

Nye and Jennie has a notable cast, featuring Gareth Bale as Aneurin Bevan and Louise Collins as Jennie Lee.

Mr Bale, fresh from touring with the Royal Shakespeare Company, said: “The opportunity to play someone like Nye Bevan does not come around often.

"Meredydd Barker’s wonderful script allows me the chance to play Nye the statesman, but also, Nye the private man.

"It’s great to be able to get under the skin of a man who was such a huge political figure while also exploring the relationship he had with his wife, Jennie Lee."

Nye and Jennie debuts in Abertillery’s The Met, on Mitre Street, at 1.30pm, on October 17. Tickets for this performance are available at: www.the-met.co.uk/whatson

The production will then tour throughout Wales and Scotland, including: Caerphilly on October 18, Newport on October 24, and Abergavenny on November 16.
