A FORMER boxer accused of driving his then girlfriend to attempt suicide also "imprisoned her in his apartment" for a week after her punched her in the face, a jury has been told.

Christopher Cooksey, 32, of Gloster's Parade, New Inn, denies three counts of actual bodily harm, two counts of assault by beating, false imprisonment and administering poison or a noxious substance with intent.

The jury had previously heard that Mr Cooksey had forced his girlfriend to snort cocaine after assaulting her. All counts are said to have taken place in December last year.

Summing up the prosecution's case Matthew Cobbe told Cardiff Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday, October 16) that Mr Cooksey's alleged violence towards the complainant caused "injuries and her effective detention in his own home.to hide these injuries."

"Because of his insecurities, he was unable to accept that she had been in previous relationships," Mr Cobbe said.

"He punched her in the face face in his flat. He caused heavy bruising to her arm, pain to her ribs and a black eye.

"But the defendant has told you this is all made up, that it simply didn't happen.

"Does it matter that you have not heard any medical evidence? Not at all, because the evidence came from her. She described for you the actual bodily harm she suffered. The detention in his flat that followed is because of that work, because of those injuries. He kept her with him for a week, making sure there was nobody to see those injuries.

"Of course, by his evidence it didn't happen. None of it."

Mr Cobbe also reminded the jury of the medical evidence they had heard in relation to an alleged suicide attempt by the complainant.

A medical consultant told the court the complainant, who was examined after an apparent suicide attempt at work on December 28, had 14 times the amount of paracetamol in her system needed to take her own life. Proceeding.
