A RE-ENACTMENT fanatic has been told he faces jail after being found guilty of possessing a sword, an axe and a knuckle duster.

Alun Powell, of Newport, was found guilty of three counts of possessing offensive weapons, following a row with a group outside his house.

But the 31-year-old was cleared of assaulting Kamil Ahmed or using the weapons to make threats.

Judge Christopher Vosper QC told Powell he could face jail when he returns to court for sentence.

He said: "In one of the charges, if not two, an implement with a blade was involved and the starting guidelines is a custodial term."

Powell had told Newport Crown Court he takes part in historical medieval battles – which involves full contact fighting with the use of offensive and defensive weapons characteristic of the Middle Ages.

He said he and his father, who he lives with, had been plagued by anti-social behaviour for the past three years, with incidents including having rubbish pushed through their letterbox.

Powell said on the night of the allegations against him he had gone outside the take photographs of a group in cars tooting their horns and revving their engines, and admitted he left the house with a knuckleduster in one hand and a mobile phone in the other.

He told the jury a confrontation occurred and he had taken an axe and a “14th Century European sword” out of his own car - explaining he used them to take part in re-enactments.

Powell was handed bail and the case was adjourned for reports.
