A CHARITY campaigner who has raised thousands of pounds for St David’s Hospice Care has told of how he was beaten unconscious in a pub toilet after attempting to break up a fight.

Ed Beverley-Jones was in the Auberge pub in Abergavenny on the night of Friday October 12, to toast the success of a charity event he had attended earlier that evening.

But things took an unexpected turn when he said he encountered three men smacking another man’s head against a tiled wall in the bathroom of the pub.

After imploring the three to stop the brutal attack, Mr Beverley-Jones became their new target, he added.

He blacked out from the blows to his head and torso, and when he regained consciousness, he found himself alone in the bathroom on the floor, covered in blood and clinging to the doorframe.

Mr Beverley-Jones is well-known for his charity work, including last year’s ‘Follow the Swallow’s event, which saw him cycle to the Sahara and back, emulating the migratory journey of the birds, to raise money for the Newport-based hospice.

But due to his head injuries, Mr Beverley-Jones is unable to remember clearly the attack, which began while he had his back turned to the three men.

Despite being left with swelling and bruises to his head and face, wobbly teeth, cuts on the inside of his mouth, and abdominal pain, all of which he is still recovering from, he also said he would still step in and help if confronted with the same scene again.

“I think most people would break up a fight,” he said. “I have no regrets, and I’d do it again.”

A Gwent Police spokeswoman has urged anyone with information to contact the police, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously.

In a statement, she said: “We received a report of an assault in the Auberge pub in Abergavenny sometime between 10pm and 12pm on Friday 12th October.

“It’s thought the incident happened near to the men’s toilets when the victim intervened in another incident between two men.”

Mr Beverley-Jones also said he does not plan to let his injuries get in the way of continued charity work, and on Thursday he will begin a cycle to the Sicilian volcano, Mount Etna, and back, again for the hospice.

He wished to thank Lerwick Financial Group for their £500 donation to his cause.
