A CHARITY that aims to provide activities for young people and adults with learning disabilities has celebrated the launch of its new Cycling and Multisport project.

Following a wait of almost five years, Synergy Wales finally launched the project at Cwmbran Stadium, allowing trustees, committee members and many of their loyal supporters to experiment with the various cycles and sports equipment available.

This includes a tandem cycle kindly donated by the St Pierre Golf Club and presented by Eric Brown, president of the club.

Among other guests were Anthony Hunt, leader of Torfaen Council, Angharad Collins, CEO of Torfaen Leisure Trust and Pedal Power Cardiff’s director Sian Donovan and senior officer Kevin Rahman-Daultrey.

Synergy launched in December 2013, initially as a protest to the cuts to social services in Newport City Council. Several parents came together and having decided to take matters into their own hands, organised themselves into Synergy Wales (Cyfle Cymru).

Television presenter Eddie Butler is their patron.

Following a move to Torfaen, the charity’s fortunes greatly improved, thanks to a partnership with Torfaen Leisure Trust, which opened its doors to the charity and has provided much needed space and advice in moving the projects forward.

Grants from Sport Wales and the Gwent Regional Partnership Board have enabled the Trustees to purchase specialist cycles and indoor sports equipment.

In addition to this the grants provide for the employment of three part time individuals who have been trained in all aspects of safety and supervision of the project.
