THE "devastated" children of the elderly couple killed in last weeks M4 crash paid tribute to a couple who were "loved by so many people."

James Stafford, 69, and Bridget Stafford, 70, originally from Ireland but living in the Surrey area, died when their red Volvo 940 was hit head on by a red Ford Mondeo driven the wrong way down the M4.

The couple were returning from a break in Ireland when the accident happened between 3am and 3.30am last Monday morning.

A staement was today issued on behalf of the Staffod's family.

It said: "We are devastated by the deaths of our parents James and Bridget Stafford, who were loved by us and so many people.

"We offer our condolences to the other families involved in this tragic incident.

"We thank the emergency services for their help and support.

"All that we ask for now is to be left alone to mourn our loss."

Three of the four men in the Mondeo died in the crash.

They were: Christopher Beresford, 18, of Kestrel Way, Duffryn, Lee Andrew Maggs, 26, of Chaffinch Way, Duffryn, and Sam Case, 19, of Maindee.
