TWO of the people killed in last week's M4 crash had previous convictions for driving offences.

The two teenage boys were in the car pursued by police before the crash a red Ford Mondeo.

The Mondeo drove the wrong way down the M4 motorway after the chase, before colliding head-on with a red Volvo 940.

The impact killed the two people in the Volvo, Bridget Stafford, 70, and James Stafford, 69, from Surrey, who were returning from a break in Ireland, as well as three of the people in the Mondeo: Christopher Beresford, 18, Sam Case, 19, and Lee Maggs, 26, of Chaffinch Way, Duffryn.

An 18-year-old man was the only survivor of the crash.

He was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, with multiple fractures and his condition is now described as stable.

Christopher Beresford, 18, of Kestrel Way, Duffryn, who police believe was driving the Mondeo, had been given a 12-month sentence for driving while disqualified and aggravated vehicle taking in March 2006.

Sam Case, 19, of Maindee, had also been found guilty in February 2006 for breach of a supervision order, driving while disqualified and theft of a motor vehicle.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is now investigating the crash and the factors leading up to it.

Their investigation is ongoing.
