PEOPLE in Monmouth will have a chance on Thursday to learn about a scheme that - subject to funding - could see the town reconnected to the River Wye.

The A40 road currently cuts off the town from the river, but a project proposed by Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, could change all that.

The Connect2 project proposes the restoration of an old iron railway bridge over the Wye and a new foot-cycle bridge over the river Monnow, to create an attractive off road route into town and open up the riverside for leisure activities.

Nationwide, the Connect2 programme aims to improve travel in and around 79 communities by creating practical and accessible walking and cycling routes.

It is one of six schemes competing for a single grant of up to £50 million from the Big Lottery Fund competition called Living Landmarks: The People's Millions competition.

The winner will ultimately be decided by a public television vote in December.

A community day will be held in Monmouth town centre on Thursday to publicise the Wye scheme.

There will be a continental market and entertainment in the town, and a guided tour of the proposed route.
