A GAY man who attacked his partner with an electric flat iron has been jailed for two years at Cardiff crown court.

As Zane Jones, 30, was lead to the cells, he kissed his victim, Mark Jones.

Jones of Troy Way, Monmouth, had admitted to charges of causing actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon, a knife.

The court heard that Zane Jones had in the past served 45 months for attacking another male partner by stabbing him in the chest and back.

Recorder Simon Ticken told him " I consider you represent a significant risk causing serious injuries to a member of the public.

This was an unprovoked and disgraceful attack.

It was largely luck he didn't suffer a more serious injury".

Procecutor Owen Williams said Jones and the victim had lived together since the summer of 2006.

On Monday March 16 they went drinking with friends in Monmouth and returned to a house for coffee and food.

Suddenly Jones attacked his partner from behind, hitting him six times with a flat iron.

The defender left and returned later brandishing a carving knife with a 10 inch blade.

Mark Jones suffered bruises swellings and cuts.

Zane Jones told the police "Yes, I hit him in self defence".

His council Cannan Siva said "His partner came to court to give him support. This was an incident in a domestic context".

They are still in a relationship and there is an intention to have a civil marriage this year.

I have to accept this was an unattractive offence committed in the heat of the moment. There was no significant injury.

"He had been reacting to comments made about his past".

The Recorder directed that on release he be on licence for two years.
