HARTRIDGE HIGH GCSE RESULTS: At the top end the school had some amazing results, with more A* and A grades than ever before, and a number of individuals excelled themselves, notably, Tanya Knight, Kirstie Miln, Adam Slaughter, Sam Attewell, Angharard Bishop, Nicholas Johnston. In total 54 students achieved five or more GCSE grades A*-C - the most for many a year.

COMBINED CADET FORCE: Hartridge has been selected as one of only two schools in Wales (the other being Treorchy Comprehensive School) to be selected to establish a Combined Cadet Force.

The school is fortunate to have on the teaching staff a former captain in the army, Mr Dave Jackson, who will help establish the initiative.

Ryan Idzi, who is a star of the X Factor, currently showing on ITV. Ryan was the school goalkeeper when the acdemy won the English Schools FA Cup at Anfield, he is currently serving in the army.

We all wish him well.

Chris Pritchard, who just left the school to go to the USA on a golf scholarship. Chris has settled in well - so well that he has won the first tournament he has entered - winning the Inter College Championship, scoring a final round of 66.

BRITISH RED CROSS: Further to my recent article in Grassroots concerning the Red Cross, the new name of their Mobile Loan Service is now Mobile Community Equipment Service. They also have a new address, which is Bradbury House, Mission Court, Newport, NP20 2DW and The telephone number is now 01633 245753.

At this new location they now have a practical aids to living shop', this is the first kind for the Red Cross in Wales. Within this spacious and welcoming shop you can view, obtain impartial advice on and purchase a wide range of low- cost medical and daily living aids equipment.

The ethos of the shop is to promote independence both inside and outside the home. All items stocked are geared towards making every- day tasks both easier and safer for older and disabled people and individuals recovering from accident, injury or illness.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS: I was privileged, with other Newport city councillors, to present awards at the recent Duke of Edinburgh Awards Ceremony held at The Riverfront, Newport.

What was apparent to the packed theatre was the outstanding work done by the youngsters in our community to gain these awards and the dedication of the staff who run the schemes.

In this area youngsters of Alway Youth Club, Somerton Youth Club and Ringland Youth Club were well up to the challenge of gaining the awards.

In particular two youth club rock bands formed by young people from Somerton providided music for the audience, who responded with rapturous applause.
