THE funeral of the married couple killed in a head-on crash on the M4 last week was due to be held in their native Ireland today.
James Stafford, 69, and his wife Bridget, 70, were returning from holiday in County Mayo when their Volvo 940 was confronted by a Ford Mondeo being driven the wrong way.
The couple died following the collision with the Mondeo in the early hours of Monday, September 17, near the Brynglas tunnels.
Three men in the Mondeo also died - Christopher Beresford, 18, of Kestrel Way, Duffryn, who police believe was the driver, Sam Case, 19, of Maindee, and Lee Maggs, 26, of Chaffinch Way, Duffryn - while another passenger, an 18-year-old man, is stable in hospital.
Mr and Mrs Stafford lived in Surrey but were originally from the island of Achill in County Mayo.
A wake was held last night and the funeral service took place on Achill at 10am today.
