A TEENAGER whose ankle was smashed in a hit-and-run faces spending up to three more months in plaster.

Danny Woods, 16, from School View, Winchestown, Nantyglo, was on King Street, Nantyglo, when the collision happened.

A dark coloured Renault Clio hit Danny, but did not stop.

The Clio then collided with two other vehicles causing minor damage before driving off.

It is believed the driver was female with dark shoulder length bobbed hair.

Police are still hunting the driver.

Danny was rushed to Nevill Hall Hospital by ambulance, where doctors tried to reset his ankle.

But his crushed bones started to deteriorate as they repositioned his foot and in the end surgeons were forced to operate to insert wires in his ankle to hold it in place.

They warned him his ankle may never fully recover, but estimated he could be out of plaster by late October.

Now, that seems unlikely, after Danny's most recent X-ray showed the bones have failed to knit together.

"There was a gap between the bones on the X-ray," his mother, Mary, explained.

"The doctors say it is just a case of waiting, but that he could be in plaster for eight to 12 more weeks."

In a worst case scenario, if the bones failed to heal, further operation could be necessary, though at this stage it is unlikely.

In the meantime, Danny says being unable to go out and spend time with his friends is hard.

His mother said: "He's been really miserable.

"He can do more than straight after the accident and is not in as much pain, except when they have changed the plaster, which is really painful."

Danny is still hoping the driver of the car will be caught by police, but is determined to stay upbeat.

"It's all I can do," he said.
