A 31-YEAR-OLD has been locked up after ransacking his mum’s house, stealing her car and causing over £14,000 of damage in a drunken crash less than three days after getting out of prison.

Adam Malyn, of no fixed abode, got out of jail on August 23 this year after serving a six-week sentence for arson.

Prosecutor Nik Strobl told Cardiff Crown Court that after his release Malyn turned up drunk at his mother’s address in Abertridwr, Caerphilly County Borough, and asked if he could stay the night.

“She said yes, as long as he left at 9am the following morning and took her house keys back to the neighbour,” explained Mr Strobl.

“She then left with her grandson, the defendant’s son, to go on holiday to Whitby.

“Before she left she removed the contents of the safe and took her car keys to the neighbour’s house. But she forgot to take the spare set out of the house.

“The defendant failed to return his mother’s house keys to the neighbour. Instead he left with two mobile phones and a pair of gloves.

“In the early hours of the 26th he returned and stole £40 in cash from a jar in her bedroom, along with various items of jewellery including her husband’s wedding band which had great sentimental attachment to her.

“He drove off in her car using the spare key which he had found.”

The court heard Malyn lost control of his mother’s car in Bryngelli Terrace, Abertridwr, and smashed into a parked Mazda.

Hearing the noise, its owner ran outside and saw Malyn trying to walk away from the scene.

“The owner tried to stop him as he was initially concerned,” Mr Strobl told the court.

“But when the defendant wouldn’t stop, the owner tripped and detained him until police arrived.

“The defendant told him: ‘I’m sorry, I’m going to be put away again. I’ve just got out.’”

A breathalyser test found Malyn more than four times the drink drive limit, but he failed to give a sample when taken to the police station. The court heard his binge caused more than £14,000 worth of damage with both cars being written off.

He pleaded guilty to driving without insurance, failing to provide a specimen, aggravated vehicle taking with damage over £5,000 and theft from a dwelling. He was convicted after a trial of burglary of a dwelling.

In mitigation, John Davies told the court his client was an alcoholic who had let drink corrode his life. He added that fortunately no one was in the parked car at the time.

“He knows he’s been an idiot, and that he should have stayed sober,” said Mr Davies.

“He’s now got to the age where he knows he can’t go on like this.”

In a victim impact statement from Malyn’s mother, read out to the court, she said his actions had depressed and upset her.

“It was his last chance. I gave him the opportunity and trusted him,” she continued.

“It has taken over my life.”

Sentencing Malyn to a total of two years in prison, Recorder Nicholas Jones said the offending was so serious he could only pass an immediate custodial sentence.

Malyn was also banned for driving for two years after his sentence is complete, and will have to pay a £140 victim surcharge.
