PLANS exempting young people in Wales leaving care from having to pay council tax until they are 25 have been put out to consultation.
Finance secretary Mark Drakeford has said it is planned to bring the new policy into change in April next year.
Mr Drakeford said: “I want to ensure the Welsh Government and our local authorities are doing everything we can to support care leavers and are supporting their successful transition into adulthood and independent living.
“Earlier this year, I asked local authorities to consider using their discretionary powers to grant a full dispensation from council tax for all care leavers, regardless of their individual circumstances."
He also singled out Torfaen County Borough Council for praise for being the first local authority in Wales to bring the policy in.
He added: “This is an important opportunity to make our council tax system fairer and I am keen to hear everyone’s views and to work with stakeholders to improve our approach.”
The consultation will run until Wednesday, December 19. Take part at beta.gov.wales/council-tax-exemptions-care-leavers
