NEWPORT’S Christmas lights will be switched on by football superstar, Ryan Giggs.

The news that the Wales manager will press the button to officially launch Christmas in the city centre, on November 17, was announced today.

Mr Giggs is the most-decorated player in football history, playing for Manchester United 963 times and Wales 64 times.

The football player will joined by another special guest, yet to be announced, in helping the Mayor of Newport, Cllr Malcolm Linton, kick off the festive season.

Countdown to Christmas is organised by the Newport Now Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Newport City Council, Friars Walk, Kingsway Centre and Newport City Radio.

Newport Now manager, Kevin Ward, said: “We are delighted to be able to announce that Ryan Giggs will be switching on Newport’s Christmas lights this year.

“Ryan is a true sporting superstar and we are sure his appearance will bring even more crowds into the city centre for Countdown to Christmas.”

Mr Giggs will switch the lights on at 5.15pm on the day, with a firework display from the roof of Kingsway car park at 5.30pm. .

Details of the live music acts performing during the day and the special guest helping to switch on the Christmas lights will be revealed next week.

The Countdown to Christmas, on November 17, will run from midday until 5.30pm, ending with a spectacular fireworks display.
