A BIG crowd gathered to commemorate the end of the centenary of the First World War in Newport tonight.
Newport joined in with a series of special events across the UK with the Nation's Tribute - which honours the millions of people killed or wounded in battles and those on the home front who struggled amidst pain and loss to help ensure freedom survived.
The event at the Queen Elizabeth ll playing field in Ringland at 6.50pm saw The Last Post be played by Alex Linton, a bugler from Gwent Music Brass ensemble, before Lord Lieutenant of Gwent Robert Aitken light a beacon.
At the same time, similar events were taking place across the UK and at 7.05pm churches and cathedrals across the UK - and Newport - rang their bells n a celebration of peace and to mark the ending of World War One.
The ceremony ended with the Greater Gwent Brass Ensemble playing a variety of songs and finishing with the UK and Welsh National Anthems.
