CAERLEON welterweight Rosie Eccles has been knocked out of the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships.

The 22-year-old Commonwealth Games silver medallist lost in the preliminary round to Canada's Myriam Da Silva Rondeau on a split decision (4:1).

Pontypool ABC's Eccles was making her debut at the event, which this year is taking place in New Delhi, India, but couldn't clear the first hurdle.

In a post on Instagram, she wrote: "I’m completely heartbroken to say that in my 13th fight this year, my luck wasn’t in.

"While I thought I’d done enough in the ring, I hugely under-performed. And under-performed when it really mattered. And that falls on my shoulders.

"My dream of becoming world champion this year is over.

"But I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone for all the support this year. I am so, so grateful.

"And so sorry that I was again unable to achieve what I set out to. Good luck to the rest of my team. Go get them medals."

Eccles' Pontypool ABC stablemate and fellow GB Boxing squad member Lauren Price starts her campaign in the middleweight division on Monday.

Price is looking to add a world medal to the gold and bronze she picked up at this year's Commonwealth Games and European Championships respectively.
