THESE pictures capture the atmosphere at what was a special day at Rodney Parade.

Fans packed the stadium for one of the biggest games in the history of Newport County AFC.

It was an evening kick-off and the stage was set for drama under the lights.

A giant-killing was in the air and Newport wasted no time in demonstrating why, Jamille Matt heading home after just 10 minutes to put the home side 1-0 up.

The fans of the 2016 Premier League winners were stunned into silence but both sets of supporters knew there was a long way to go.

Re-emerging after half-time, Newport were immediately under the cosh. Some last-ditch defending was keeping the visitors at bay but a goal seemed inevitable.

So it proved in the 82nd minute. Following a scramble in the goalmouth, the ball fell to Rachid Ghezzal on the edge of the area. The winger rifled a shot past Joe Day into the back of the net.

County rallied however and just two minutes later a penalty was awarded against Marc Albrighton for handball. Padraig Amond slotted home from the spot and Rodney Parade erupted once more.

Newport will now eagerly await tonight's draw to find out who they will face in the fourth round.
