A LEADING meningitis charity has offered advice about the illness following the death of 15-year-old Katelyn Lazare.

Rob Dawson, director of support at Meningitis Research Foundation, said, “We are saddened to learn of the death of Katelyn and our thoughts and condolences go out to her family and friends. We’re here to help anyone affected by meningitis and septicaemia."

Katelyn, described as "kind and caring" with a passion for dancing, died of meningitis on December 27, a few days after falling ill and 24 hours after being admitted to hospital.

Mr Dawson added: “Sadly we see even more people affected by meningitis and septicaemia during winter, particularly around Christmas.

"This is thought to be due to the bacteria being able to invade the body more easily via the nose and throat at this time of year due to co-infection with flu virus, and because the bacteria can spread more rapidly when people spend longer periods indoors in close proximity.

“Teenagers are one of the higher risk age groups for meningitis and septicaemia caused by meningococcal bacteria.

"We encourage everyone to take up the offer of the vaccines that are included in routine immunisation schedules to protect themselves and their families.

"However, there are not yet vaccines available to prevent all forms of the disease so it is vital that people are aware of the symptoms.”
