THE next time a cynical old football fan declaims within earshot that the romance of the FA Cup is dead, tap them on the shoulder and say: “Not in Newport.”

While many of last weekend’s third round ties were played out in stadia that were barely half full, there was never a chance that empty seats and terraces would be a problem at Rodney Parade.

True, the likelihood of drawing a big crowd depends to a large extent on the luck of the draw, and Newport County AFC has had more than its fair share in the past two seasons. Crucially however, the club, its players, and its supporters have taken full advantage.

Among the facts and figures bandied about before and after Sunday's unforgettable match against Leicester City were the sums of money that County stand to make from their Cup exploits.

Money should not be the be-all and end-all of course - but it means an awful lot for a club like this, one that few can argue have been overachieving on a shoestring budget. So £225,000 for winning three FA Cup matches, plus hefty sums from TV coverage, are vital.

It means a great deal beyond the confines of Rodney Parade too. Pubs. clubs and eateries in the city will have benefited, the feelgood factor cannot be under-estimated, and the thrill of listening to and watching the likes of Alan Shearer, Ian Wright and - through gritted teeth - Leicester fan Gary Lineker - all praising County players and manager Michael Flynn, is all part of the magic.

Millions of football fans watched this match on television, including overseas and, unless they support Leicester City, they have been rewarded with a special footballing memory.

That is what happened several thousands of miles away, in California, where members of Newport County USA, the official American Supporters' Club of Newport County AFC, were watching the heroics.

"Amazing. What a performance. So proud of the team for digging in after the equaliser and coming up with an incredible win!" tweeted @NewportCounty US after the final whistle.

"Hope everyone in Newport celebrates well tonight!"

We certainly did. Roll on the fourth round.
