FLATS for elderly people could be knocked down to make way for 16 new homes under plans submitted to Newport council.

Housing provider Pobl Group has lodged plans to demolish 33 flats in Kirby Daniel Court, Newport, and replace it with a development of three-bedroom family homes.

The site is currently made up of studio and one-bedroom apartments.

A statement from Pobl said: "We have applied for planning permission to re-develop the site of an existing residential building housing a mix of studio and one-bedroom apartments and replace it with a contemporary development of 16 three-bedroom family homes.

"We will be offering these new properties for sale through shared ownership where buyers part buy and part rent a new home, it’s a much more affordable way for people to get on the property ladder.

"Over the last few months Pobl has been working with all the residents to find new, improved homes that meet each resident’s specific needs and requirements."

A total of 32 parking spaces would be provided under the plans.

A design and access statement says the plans will 'regenerate' the site with a "mix of quality family homes."
