PLANS for a housing development at the site of a former school building in Cwmbran could get the green light next week.

Planning officers have recommended plans to knock down the junior school building of the former Blenheim School in St Dials, Cwmbran, are approved by Torfaen councillors next week.

Melin Homes is behind the application to redevelop the site into 17 affordable homes, with a mixture of houses and flats.

Under the plans eight of the homes would be one-bedroom, seven would be two-bed and there would be two, three-bedroom homes.

A parking area off the existing access road would provide 32 off-street parking spaces under the plans.

The plans also include a play area and areas of public open space.

Blenheim Road Community Primary School opened in its new location directly south of its previous location in 2016.

The relocation was funded as part of Torfaen council's 21st Century Schools Programme, working with the Welsh Government.

Melin Homes has discussed the plans with the school.

The "quality development" is planned to be in-keeping with the surrounding area, ensuring there is no detrimental impact on the closely located Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation.

Councillors on Torfaen council's planning committee will decide the plans at a meeting on Tuesday, January 15.
