PRIME minister Theresa May's government faces a vote of no confidence this evening after MPs across the political spectrum rejected its Brexit deal.

The Labour Party launched the vote after Members of Parliament rejected the deal by 230 votes.

Politicians representing constituencies in Gwent have now told the Argus how they will be voting.

David Davies, Gwent's only Conservative MP, said he will be voting in support of the government.

“I believe the UK should make its own laws, be responsible for its own borders, and not hand over billions to an organisation which cannot properly account for it," he said.

"For these reasons I campaigned strongly for a leave vote in the 2016 EU referendum.

“The Monmouth constituency was split down the middle, although there is no way of knowing exactly how the constituency voted because it includes around 10,000 voters from Torfaen where there was a huge majority to leave.

“The prime minister’s deal was a very generous compromise which would have kept Britain in the customs union for at least two years and meant a payment of £39bn to the EU. I was just about willing to accept this in the interests of getting the UK out of the EU by the end of March.

“However, we must accept that very few people want compromise. I will support Theresa May’s government in the no confidence vote today, and over the coming weeks I will vote in any way to ensure that by the end of March we are out of the EU.”

However, Nick Thomas-Symonds, who represents Torfaen, revealed he will be voting against the government, saying: "I have absolutely no confidence at all in this Conservative government. Its austerity policies have done so much damage to people in my constituency of Torfaen.

"The historic 230-vote defeat on the Prime Minister’s botched deal was a result of her wasting two years on internal Conservative party politics, failing to put the national interest first.”

Chris Evans, who is the Labour MP for Islwyn, will also vote no confidence in the government.

"The government has brought nothing but chaos and humiliation to the country", he said.

"It is time for a change that is why I will be voting no confidence."

Jessica Morden, who is the MP for Newport East, said: "Last night’s vote – the biggest defeat for a Government in the Commons since the 1920s – was a damning indictment of both the prime minister’s Brexit deal, and her government’s incompetent approach to negotiations over the last two years.

"The prime minister remains in office, but not in power, while her government is rapidly descending into even further division and chaos. The public deserve better than this. I will be voting in favour of Labour’s motion of no confidence in the government."

Blaenau Gwent's Nick Smith MP said he would also be voting against the government.

Due to illness the MP for Newport East, Paul Flynn, will not be voting this evening.

The vote is scheduled for 7pm.
