A hospice room has been named in recognition of the unstinting support for St David’s Hospice Care from a South Wales family and business.

Businessman Roger Gambarini, his wife Julie, their children Simon and Jane, and business Office Visions, are stalwart supporters of the Newport-based charity.

Room eight, Newport, in the £5m, 15-bed hospice at Malpas, Newport, has been dedicated to The Gambo’s.

Through their staging of the annual Gambarini golf day, first arranged in 1991, more than £300,000 has been raised for the charity.

The golf day, which takes place each year come rain or shine, raised a further £15,000 this year. It was staged at the Celtic Manor’s Roman Road course and brought the grand total to £317,254 raised over the past 28 years.

Roger Gambarini, who was the Celtic Manor’s Twenty Ten Club captain for 2015 and is a consultant with South Wales-based Office Visions Ltd, said: “We have personal reasons for wanting to support St David’s Hospice Care over the years.

"When my father was taken ill in 1992, he was cared for by the nurses from St David’s Hospice Care. The nurses were fantastic. It was their untiring efforts in supporting both him and the family during that time of sadness which makes us so keen to try and support the nurses, who today are offering similar support to the many families in South Wales who are in need of help.

“It is very nice of St David’s Hospice Care to dedicate the room at the Inpatient Unit to the Gambo’s. To be honest I didn’t want the recognition but it is a very welcome gesture from Emma Saysell and all at St David’s Hospice Care, who do such marvellous work in the community.”

Julie Gamabarini, who volunteered at the former St Anne’s Hospice for eight years, said: “The room dedication is a wonderful and really quite humbling gesture. It’s lovely and a lasting recognition for the whole family and the business at this fantastic new hospice.”

Emma Saysell, chief executive of St David’s Hospice Care, dedicating the room to the Gambo’s, said: “Roger, Julie, their family and and the team at Office Visions have provided wonderful support to St David’s Hospice Care for very many years.

“The golf days they have organised over the past 28 years are truly memorable and the money raised during that time for St David’s Hospice Care is amazing, a truly commendable achievement and one for which we are all extremely grateful.”

There are now just four of the 15 rooms remaining undedicated at the hospice. They are: 1: Abergavenny, 3: Caldicot, 5: Crickhowell and 6: Ebbw.
