• Chepstow is being taken over by revellers for their thirteenth annual Wassail and Mari Lwyd this Saturday.

This is a free fun event, kicking off at 1pm at Greenman Backpackers, on Beaufort Square. Guests – with their Mari Lwyd (horse skulls decorated for good luck) – will knock doors, challenging residents to rhyme Welsh insults before sharing a drink.

There will then be wassailing of the apple trees in the nearby Castle Dell, followed by a Mari Lwyd beauty pageant – at The Drill Hall – from 4pm. At 6.15pm, the English and Welsh will meet in the middle of the Old Iron Bridge, followed by a floodlit 'grand' Mari Lwyd outside Chepstow Museum from 7.15pm.
