LEADING frozen food specialist Iceland has announced that it is opening a new store in Bargoed – bringing around 30 new jobs to the area.

The new store will be located right on the high street, in the 8,800 sq ft Units One and Two, the largest on the Lowry Plaza development on Hanbury Road, which was formerly occupied by Poundworld.

Iceland Managing Director Richard Walker said, “We’re really pleased to be opening our new store at Lowry Plaza. We are proud to be a genuine community retailer, serving customers on high streets throughout the country, and recruiting our store colleagues locally. We are naturally particularly delighted to be creating 30 new jobs in Bargoed and have been recognised for many years as one of the best big companies to work for in the UK.

“Although we are famous for frozen food, our stores also carry great ranges of chilled food, fresh produce, groceries and drinks, while our unique home delivery service offers free delivery of in-store purchases of £25 or more.

“Our Iceland own label range has won multiple awards for quality and innovation, while consumers who care about sustainability will value our industry-leading pledges to eliminate plastic packaging from our own label range by 2023, and the opportunity to buy own label food that is free of palm oil ingredients; they will also recognise the important role that frozen food can play in cutting food waste”.

Cllr Sean Morgan, Deputy Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council added, “We’ve been working very hard indeed to secure a tenant for these units and are delighted that Iceland have chosen the Lowry Plaza development as the location for their new store, which shows a huge vote of confidence in support for the local high street.

“Iceland is a strong high street retailer and brand which has stores on high streets right across the UK. I’m sure the community will warmly welcome this significant addition to Bargoed’s shopping offer”.

Work is expected to begin to fit out the store from late January, with the store likely to open its doors to the public later in the spring.

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s well-established ‘Choose the High Street’ campaign focuses on raising awareness of consumer choice and aims to encourage people to support their local high streets more often. It also highlights the diverse retail offer across Caerphilly county borough’s town centres.
