Last week's photograph of the railway lines opposite the Royal Gwent Hospital on Cardiff Road:

Today we see Cardiff Road and the railway line running along side. This Great Western Railway line connected from the Eastern Valleys line to the South Wales line and via junctions, to the docks. The lines were taken up when Cardiff Road was widened in 1932, all that was left was the sunken road giving access to the houses & Tovey's the undertakers. Behind the wall on the right is the Royal Gwent Hospital. In the 'Now' photo, the cameraman is facing the other way, the RGH is on his left.

On the previous week's picture of Newport Arcade

Now and Then's picture shows Newport Arcade's Cambrian Road entrance on the left is reported to be Mr Jones proprietor of the music and book shops numbers 6 and 7 in the photo taken around the late Edwardian period, which coincides with the contractor who built the properties Mr Williams , Miles Blackburn was Newport's Mayor 1909-1910. Constructed between High Street and Cambrian Road itself built to ease traffic congestion in High Street the arcade opened in 1895. The now picture shows Tibetan Dawn on the let and opposite just out of shot is the Pot Cafe established about 40 years ago and is now run by sisters Angela and Linda. 4 and 5 units were previously occupied by Woodgates selling baby clothes and prams. Today the arcade has a diversity of shops which makes for a pleasant shopping experience well worth a visit.
