VOLUNTEERS with a hard-working city community group were out and about in Newport at the weekend helping homeless people keep warm.

As temperatures dropped, the group of four volunteers from Pride in Pill went out in the city centre on Saturday, January 19, handing out soup and hot drinks to people sleeping on the streets.

Among them was the group's founder and chairman Paul Murphy, along with Tracey Jones, Sarah Wilmott and Shabir Hussain.

Mr Murphy said he had his colleagues spoke to between 20 and 30 people, and handed out 16 cups of soup, four cups of tea and three cups of coffee, as well as bread, doughnuts, biscuits, cake and fruit.

"We had a really good response," he said.

"People were really happy to see us and people passing were saying what a good thing we were doing.

"It's good to be able to give them the things they need, and they can tell us if they need anything like blankets.

"We don't mind spending our own money because it's sad to see them out on the streets."

He added the group is intending to go out every weekend helping the city's homeless.

"It's hard to do it in the week because people are working, but we will be doing it every weekend," he said.

"We are going to carry on doing it forever."

Pride in Pill was founded in 2014 as a litter picking group, but has since branched out into a wide range of community activities, and has since won a number of awards, including the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service - the equivalent of an MBE for volunteer groups. Last year it opened a new headquarters opposite The Picton pub in Commercial Road.
