AN EXCITING exhibition, inspired by Chartism, launches soon.

Newport Rising: Chartism Redrawn will be coming to Cwtsh Arts Centre, on Stow Hill, from January 26, presenting a mixture of contemporary artwork.

The exhibition will feature a new graphic novel, reimagining the Newport Rising of 1839, produced by local graphic artist, Josh Cranton.

The exhibition will also include an account of the events of the last twelve months led by local charity Our Chartist Heritage (OCH)

Project coordinator, David Daniel, said: “Last year, OCH secured significant financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“This enabled us to create special events (including Newport Rising Festival), works and permanent installations that remember and celebrate the story of Chartism in South Wales,

“This exhibition is partly a documentation of the story of the project so far, but also a chance for visitors to find out what’s happening next, as the project is ongoing.”

2019 marks 180 years since the Newport Rising of 1839, when more than 20 Chartist demonstrators were killed outside Westgate Hotel.

The Chartists were fighting for the right to vote, with a secret ballot, a salary for MPs, with equal sized electoral districts and no requirement to own property to vote.
