WITH warnings of very cold weather and icy conditions tonight and tomorrow morning, gritters will be out on Gwent's roads tonight.

The Met Office has said temperatures could drop close to zero tonight, and has issued a severe weather warning covering most of Wales - including Gwent.

As a result, Newport, Monmouthshire, Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly councils have confirmed gritters will be out on the roads this evening.

The Met Office warning begins at 9pm this evening and lasts until midday tomorrow, Tuesday.

A statement on the organisation's website said: "A band of rain will clear Northern Ireland on Monday evening with surface temperatures falling away behind this and icy stretches likely to form on some untreated surfaces.

"Wintry showers will push into the country from the northwest overnight, with a few centimetres possible across northern and western counties, especially over higher ground."

The organisation also said ice could be formed on roads, pavements and cycle paths, and delays may be seen on the roads as well as on public transport.

Caerphilly County Borough Council's cabinet member for infrastructure Cllr Sean Morgan said: “We have a large supply of grit and a fleet of vehicles ready to deal with ice and snow.

"Our highways team constantly monitor the weather forecast and a ready to respond 24 hours a day.

"Our priority will always be to keep main routes clear and moving, as well as ensuring we help those who need us most.
