A NUMBER of Gwent Young Farmers’ members have recently been selected to represent both the National Federation of Young Farmers (NFYFC) and Wales YFC on their international travel programme.

Cerys Baker, 21, of Usk YFC will be travelling to New Zealand to work on a farm which regularly hosts British Young Farmers, after being successful in a NFYFC selection process. Cerys will be working on a farm at Limestone Downs on the North Island near Waikato and will begin her three month stint on the farm on April 1, 2019, which will be followed by one month of travelling around the country.

Travelling to the USA will be Laura Bowyer, 25, from Usk YFC and Nerys Lewis, 21, from Wentwood YFC. Nerys will be travelling to Wyoming, living with farming families for approximately five months while Laura will be participating in a home stay, travelling to Colorado for a fortnight.

George Lewis, 26, also from Usk YFC, will be part of a group representing Wales YFC at the European Rally which is to be held in Cirencester, Gloucestershire in August 2019.

Laura Baker, Gwent YFC county chairman said: “Travelling with YFC gives members the opportunity to explore parts of the world members would perhaps never otherwise see, learn about different cultures and farming techniques and develop social skills by meeting new people from all over the world.

“With that the case, it really is fantastic to see an increasing number of Gwent Young Farmers taking up these opportunities. Better still, they return and share their experiences with our other members, which will hopefully help increase the number of applicants year on year.”
