A NEWPORT heritage group, keen to keep the legacy of the Chartists alive, has been presented with a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork.

Our Chartist Heritage was presented with the artwork by the former owner of recently-closed Newport department store Wilding’s.

A reproduction of the work, used as a panoramic window display in the department store was recently saved following the closure.

The piece depicts the Chartists marching on the Westgate Hotel in Newport.

Sheldon James of Wilding’s made the donation after having been contacted by Pat Wright, sister-in-law of the piece’s artist John Wright.

Held in high regard in the art world, Mr Wright died in 2013 but his legacy lives on through his work.

Patrick Drewett, Our Chartist Heritage chair, said"This will allow us to fulfil our objective of bringing the Chartist’s story to more people.

“It’s so important to be able to stand up for the freedom of speech that they stood for, got arrested for and died for.”

The piece may be shown at exhibition although Mr Drewett said any specific details remain to be seen.
