A PRIMARY school in Caerphilly is one of only seven schools in Wales to receive an award for their Philosophy for Schools work.

Fochriw Primary School achieved the Bronze Award, by SAPERE (Society for the Advancement of Philosophical Enquiry and Reflection in Education), the educational charity responsible for the development of Philosophy for Children (P4C in the UK).

The Award was in recognition of Fochriw Primary School's commitment to teaching philosophy across the school.

P4C is an approach to learning and teaching which enhances children’s thinking and communication skills, boosts their self-esteem, and improves their academic attainment.

P4C was established more than 40 years ago by Professor Matthew Lipman, of Montclair State University in the United States, and is now practised around the world.

In a typical session at Fochriw Primary School, pupils will sit with teachers in a circle and be shown a video clip or news article to stimulate their interest in a subject. This is followed by a short period of silent thinking time.

The class then splits into pairs or small groups to discuss questions on the subject before reassembling for a whole-class discussion.

Topics included: Should a healthy heart should be donated to a person who has not looked after themselves? Why do people treat others badly? Should you trust powerful people?

Headteacher, Mrs Pascoe, said: "We introduced Philosophy for Children more than two and a half years ago. We're delighted the accreditation reflects how it is embedded at Fochriw Primary School.

"P4C is an excellent opportunity to engage in authentic learning experiences whilst promoting the four core purposes. Most importantly the children love it!"

"I’m delighted that Fochriw Primary’s work in this area has been recognised by SAPERE and that the school is routinely offering such rich, vibrant and challenging opportunities for learning for its pupils.
