NEWPORT West Labour Party have picked their parlimentary candidate for Newport West.

Ruth Jones was chosen on Saturday from a shortlist of three candidates.

Ms Jones lives in Allt-yr-yn, Newport and is a former President of the Wales Trade Union Congress (TUC).

This will be the third time she has stood for parliment, having faced David Davies MP in the 2015 and 2017 elections in Monmouth.

The news comes months after veteran Newport West Labour MP Paul Flynn announced he would stand down after 31 years in the house of commons due to health reasons.

Mr Flynn, 83, previously said in October last year he would leave his post at “an appropriate time”, though he remains in parliament at the time of writing.

Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats and UKIP have not selected a party candidate yet.

Cllr Matthew Evans, leader of the opposition on Newport City Council, has been selected as the conservative candidate.

Amelia Womack has been selected as the Green Party candidate.
