A MAN accused of murdering a convicted child killer returned to the scene of the crime and spoke to a BBC reporter, a jury was told.

David Gaut was stabbed more than 150 times and found at his New Tredegar home after he was recently released from a 32-year jail sentence.

Ieuan Harley, aged 23, of Punch House Flats, Morgan Street, Tredegar, Darran Evesham, aged 47, of Powell's Terrace, New Tredegar, and David Osborne, aged 51, of Long Row, New Tredegar, have pleaded not guilty to his murder.

Newport Crown Court heard that Evesham told the BBC's Teleri Glyn Jones that the 54-year-old had been slayed by "Spice addicts".

Giving evidence, she told a jury that she attended the scene at Long Row with a cameraman on August 5, 2018 and spoke to a man calling himself 'Graham', who was later identified as Evesham by a police officer.

"He told me the victim had been a 'paedophile or something' and just moved into the area after being released from prison," she said.

"He said the man who lived at (flat) No 1 had been stabbed loads of times by three Spice addicts."

Miss Glyn Jones said Evesham had also told her that one of those who had murdered Mr Gaut was homeless and had been living in a car.

She said he told her the three "Spice addicts" then set the car alight and destroyed their clothes before going on the run.

Miss Glyn Jones told Police Constable Gareth Morgan, who was protecting the crime scene, what the accused had told her.

PC Morgan was asked by Ali Bajwa QC, defending Evesham, whether he could have been mistaken and why he had not chased after him once he had become a person of interest.

He replied he was not wrong, adding: "I couldn't leave my post. My job was to protect the crime scene to make sure it wasn't contaminated."

Footwear expert David Joyce told the court a bloody shoe print found at the alleged murder scene matched the pattern, alignment and a specific damage mark of Reebok trainers seized from Harley.

Prosecutor Ben Douglas-Jones QC has said that the trio brutally murdered Mr Gaut after he was lured to Osborne’s flat, who was his next-door neighbour.

It is claimed they killed him after they had found out from internet research that the alleged victim, who they knew as Dai, had killed a 15-month-old boy named Chi Ming Shek in the 1980s.

The trial before Mr Justice Lewis is expected to last four weeks.
