A GRASSROOTS group of writers is gaining popularity.

Newport Writers Group, founded by Tony Lawrence, is a group of people who are passionate about writing, ranging from poetry to prose.

The inclusive group, which accepts members 16-years-old and over, was formed in June 2017, with four members at their first meeting. It now attracts at least a dozen people to each meeting, with people on the waiting list.

“It’s not like homework,” explained Mr Lawrence.

“It’s not school, you won’t be told off for being late. Writing with a prompt can help encourage people to write. The group is about learning, friendship, and offering guidance.”

The group often come up with varied work, based on the prompt. Where one member might write something serious, another could write something comical.

At her first meeting, one member – Nia – said: “Coming here I was worried that it might be really serious or rigid, but when I arrived everyone was so friendly. I’ll definitely be coming back.”

Another member admitted they didn’t write stories for 20 years, but the group has given them the confidence to do that.

Members are diverse, with some published and others not, and includes people with autism, PTSD and other disabilities.

“When people get to know us they realise we’re all mixed in abilities and experience but that doesn’t stop us,” added Mr Lawrence.

One member who has Asperger’s syndrome joined when she was being bullied and thought no one wanted to be her friend.

She has now found her voice, performing on stage at their open mics. These monthly open mics, at Horton’s Coffee House, raising money for Guide Dogs UK. Once they raise £5,000, they can name a puppy.
