PEOPLE in a Blaenau Gwent community are "afraid to cross the road" due to careless drivers, the area's AM has claimed.

Speaking in the Assembly this week, Alun Davies said people in Beaufort had become increasingly concerned with dangerous driving in the area, and had held a public meeting on the issue last week.

The Labour AM said: "I was astonished to hear people talking there about the dangers they face in their daily lives along the roads through the community.

"I heard about children being knocked over, about people being unable to walk on pavements and about people being afraid to cross the road.

"Clearly, people can't be expected to live in these circumstances."

Asking for a statement on the Welsh Government's policies on traffic management in urban areas, he added: "The people of Beaufort can't be expected to live the lives they are living, and it's important that the government is able to create the structures and frameworks within which decisions can be taken to enable them to live their lives."

Trefnydd - or business manager - Rebecca Evans urged Mr Davies to raise his concerns directly with economy and transport minister Ken Skates.
