A CAERPHILLY County Borough Council gritter overturned last night while tackling the icy conditions in the village of Senghenydd near Caerphilly.

The Argus previously reported that Bwlch Carnygelli had been closed between Nelson and Senghenydd since about 5.10am.

The road has since reopened.

The location had already been gritted three times within a 24 hour period and the driver was returning for a fourth run at around 3am this morning when the accident occurred.

Gwent Police said in a statement: “At approximately 4.15am this morning, we received a report of an overturned gritter on the mountain road between Nelson and Senghenydd.

“No other vehicles were involved, and the driver was unhurt.

“The road was temporarily closed, and the local authority was contacted to arrange for recovery of the vehicle.”

In a statement, Cllr Sean Morgan, Cabinet Member for Highways said: “Fortunately the driver is fine and did not suffer any injuries, but this just goes to show the danger that our employees face in order to keep our roads clear of snow and ice.”

“This was a very experienced driver, but between the third and fourth gritting treatments the hill had iced over, and this demonstrates that road surfaces can still be dangerous, even when gritted.”

“I would urge all motorists to keep a close eye on the forecast and take great care when travelling across the county borough in these conditions.”

Current forecasts indicate that further snow and icy conditions are expected on Thursday and Friday. For more advice and information please visit - caerphilly.gov.uk/Services/Roads-and-pavements/Gritting-and-snow-clearing
