THE number of Newport schools being ranked in the top category has risen since last year.

The total number of schools achieving 'green status' has increased from 25 to 29.

Schools in the ‘amber’ category have decreased, from five to one.

There were many success stories, including Somerton Primary and Milton Primary School having been gone up from 'amber' to 'yellow'.

Ringland Primary was another noteable success story, after it achieved the top rating having previously been 'yellow'.

Other success stories include Malpas Court Primary, Rogerstone Primary, Bassaleg School, St Joseph's RC High School, as well as many others, which were all judged to be 'green' ratings.

However, it was not all success as four schools have remained in the lowest rating - 'red' - since the last banding. Schools in the 'red' category include Maesglas Primary & Nursery, St Julian's School, Llanwern High School and Newport High School.

The city’s two special schools – Maes Ebbw Special and Ysgol Bryn Derw – have also been raised from ‘amber’ to 'yellow'.

A spokeswoman from Newport City Council said: “Newport City Council is delighted at the high number of primary schools classed as ‘highly effective’ and awarded the top green status.

“The city is also very proud to have the only two green secondary schools in the region - Bassaleg School and St Joseph’s RC High School. This is a great achievement.

“Although there are some schools in the lower rankings who are being offered additional support, both the council and the Education Achievement Service (EAS) are working with these schools and their clusters to help them improve and to ensure they are becoming more resilient in the future.

“We are confident all our educational professionals work together to ensure schools and settings receive the best possible support to enable the realisation of the new curriculum and the reform agenda.”
