WITH the crucial Battle of the Bridges Part II in the FA Cup fourth round due to take place at Rodney Parade on Tuesday night between Newport County AFC and Middlesbrough with the plum tie of Manchester City awaiting the winners, another prize is up for grabs.
The Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge will present the winning manager – either County chief Michael Flynn or Boro boss Tony Pulis who are both Pill-born – with a canvas print of the city’s bridge at the end of the clash.
The print was enthusiastically received by Middlesbrough fans at the end of last month when County and Boro played out a 1-1 draw at the Riverside Stadium who queued to take photographs of the Newport Bridge against the background of the Tees Bridge when it was due to be given to either Flynn or Pulis.
But their stalemate in Middlesbrough meant all is still to play for as the prize is yet to be claimed.
The histories of the Grade I-Listed Newport Transporter Bridge and Grade II-Listed Tees Transporter Bridge can be traced back to them being used to cross busy tidal rivers to access docks, iron and steelworks.
