Fuel can add up to a significant portion of your monthly household bills, so keeping an eye out for the best price is important. IAN CRAIG took a look at the cheapest places to fill up across Gwent.

IT'S a familiar story to any driver.

You spot a petrol station displaying fuel a few pence cheaper than you've seen elsewhere.

Do you fill up now or take the chance that it'll be even cheaper somewhere else?

The Argus has taken the guesswork out by having a look at the cheapest places across Gwent to fill up.

With a few exceptions, it's the major supermarket chains which offer most of the best deals, with Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's all offering some of the cheapest prices in the region.

And it's Asda which offers the cheapest prices across the whole region, with both of its two supermarkets in Newport - in Pencarn Way and East Market Street, as well as its site in Cliff Road, Blackwood - offering unleaded at 113.7p per litre.

The same three stations also offer the cheapest place to fill up with diesel - at 123.7p per litre - with Morrisons in Rogerstone also offering the same price.

Overall, Newport and Caerphilly are the cheapest places to refuel, with unleaded available for only 2p more in Torfaen.

Motorists in Blaenau Gwent facing paying about 4p more a litre for unleaded, and drivers in Monmouthshire drivers face shelling out 6p more - with the cheapest unleaded available for 119.9p per litre at Tesco in Station Road, Chepstow. Residents living in the north of the county face paying more still, with the cheapest unleaded available for 121.9p per litre at Gulf in High Street, Raglan, Shell in Cinderhill Street, Monmouth, and the Woodside garage in Llanbadoc - 8p more than in Newport.

But for those prepared to cross the border in England, the Essar garage in Bishopswood, Herefordshire, is offering unleaded at 119.9p per litre.

Diesel prices are roughly the same across the region, with nowhere more than 125.9p per litre.

These prices represent a massive drop since last August, when the cheapest litre of unleaded in Gwent cost 123.9p - and the average price across the UK was 128.8p per litre.

Today the average price across the UK is 119.7p per litre while diesel costs on average 128.8p per litre - so drivers in Gwent are saving money compared to elsewhere in the UK.

A spokesman with the RAC said fuel prices at wholesale were coming down, meaning the cost at the pump should drop over the next two weeks. But he added savings at wholesale had not always been reflected at petrol stations recently.

"The big four supermarkets don't seem to be competing on fuel prices as much as they used to," he said.

"We always used to say prices would go up like a rocket and float down like a feather.

"Now the feather hardly floating down at all."

He added the more expensive cost in Monmouthshire was no surprise.

"Petrol stations in rural areas always charge more, and we accept that," he said. "They are providing a service and don't get as much business so if they didn't charge more they would go out of business."

He added prices at supermarket chains tend to be cheaper - with supermarkets across the UK charging an average of 3p less than the national average.

"It's always going to be cheaper at supermarkets - but it's not always as cheap as it should be," he said.

On the low fuel prices offered by the chain, an Asda spokesman said: “We work hard to offer the best value at Asda, whether that be food, fashion or fuel and we are absolutely committed to continuing to deliver everyday low prices for our customers.”
