THANKS to the overwhelming generosity of people from across Gwent, a foodbank says it is currently full to the brim.

Malpas-based Newport Foodbank, which is one of a handful of Trussell Trust centres, has provided thousands of food parcels every single day to the most vulnerable in Newport for many years. Its volunteers work round-the-clock to ensure food parcels are put together.

And since the Christmas period, the centre says it has been inundated with food donations from the public, meaning dedicated holding rooms are now full.

Foodbank manager Jon Slocombe said: “We have been left feeling humbled at the generous donations we have received.

"We have had a lot of donations from Tesco and Asda in particular - for which we are very grateful. Aneurin Bevan have also given us support, as well as lots of other companies and members of the public.

"Again, I would like to take this time to thank all those for helping us."

Mr Slocombe also revealed that following the influx of donations, he has been able to re-direct some supplies to aid other foodbanks.

"There are so many people out there who still need us," he said.

"It is a very sad situation that foodbanks are still needed in the 21st century.

"Because of the amount of donations we have received, we have given some items to other foodbanks. This is fantastic news because no one will go hungry."

He added: "In a few weeks' time we will be needing donations again. This supply will not last forever. I hope that people will continue to be as generous then as they are now."

Statistics have revealed a year-on-year rise in foodbank users at the site for the last two years. From April to September last year Newport Foodbank provided 1,969 emergency food parcels, compared to 1,439 in 2017.
