A STEEL firm have joined forces with the ABP Newport Wales Marathon to boost the next generation of Welsh runners.

Tata Steel will be at the heart of the action at the nation’s premier marathon event on Sunday, May 5 after becoming an official partner. A host of Tata Steel volunteers will help young runners and families take get a taste for mass-participation running at the ABP Newport Wales Family Mile.

The course, set in the heart of Newport city centre, will host another 50 Tata Steel employees, who will unite to promote and encourage active lifestyles in the local community.

Run 4 Wales Chief Executive Matt Newman said: “One of our goals as a not for profit organisation is to promote healthy lifestyles across the country.

“We are delighted to welcome Tata Steel on board for what promises to be another unforgettable day."

It is those employees who will be celebrated with a free space at the Family Mile, which will get underway after thousands of runners embark on their 26.2-mile marathon journeys.

The popular marathon route, devised by double Olympic marathoner Steve Brace, remains unchanged for 2019. The 26.2-mile course offers iconic landmarks, coastal wildlife, picturesque medieval villages and a high-profile opportunity for locals and visitors alike to cheer on thousands of runners, including the staff representing Tata Steel.

Tata Steel Hub Director, Martin Brunnock said: “We are very proud to be associated with the ABP Newport Wales Marathon after the success of the inaugural event last year.

“In particular the Family Mile, which is helping to encourage local children and their families to get out and active.”
