A TEAM of four volunteers made a huge dent at a notorious rubbish eye-sore in the city, clearing 50 bags of litter and two fridges in the process.

Steve Preddy, along with Paul Murphy, Tracey Jones and Robert Jones of Pride in Pill, ventured down to the area known as monkey Island, underneath the A48 SDR bridge on the eastern side of the River Usk to clear the debris washed up by the tide.

South Wales Argus:

Mr Preddy, who has mapped 70 per cent of the litter hotspots in the city, says the plan is to return for a couple of picks this year to finish the area off.

"We think it's mainly rubbish that's thrown away in other areas of the city, washed into the Usk and then pushed up onto the banks by the tide.

"We have a great relationship with the city council teams, who came and collected the waste within a few days."

Mr Preddy says his mapping project has identified a lot of hotspots in the city, and added the data is already starting to make a difference.

"People message me asking to use it to plan litter picks, which is great. It's a good start."
