MORE NEWS: Police called to protest in Newport

The deceased woman had kept a poultry stall in the Newport Market for many years and a feature of the case is that she was the mother of Mrs Lena Johnson, who died last week from the effects of taking oxalic acid at the same address.

It will be remembered that at the inquest on Friday the jury found that there was not sufficient evidence to show the conditions of the young woman's mind.

It is thought that the sad cad of her daughter had preyed upon Mr Walsh's mind.

She was unconscious when picked up and, on Dr Bassej being called, he could only pronounce life extinct.

The police were at once communicated with, and the body removed to the mortuary to await an inquest.

Newport widow drowned.

Touching letter.

The recent mention of the increased cooling facilities at the Newport Alexandra Docks has been favourably commented upon in Dock Street, but the head of a leading firm, who is always urging the gospel of publicity, asks if the Dock Company are taking steps to circulate the fact that Newport has the largest coal hoist in the Bristol Channel among the owners of the large steamers trading in the Channel.

He points out that just prior to the completion of this modern tip the largest (and newest) meat carrier afloat was diverted to Barry from Newport, possibly owning to this reason, but there is every prospect of her returning to Newport.

Incidentally, Newport can flatter itself upon the very favourable comparison, made in a Cardiff shipping journal, which openly states that the recent increase in the arrivals of tonnage at Newport is principally due to "the relatively quicker despatch obtainable at that port."

The article goes on to mourn the fact that the loading rate at the neighbouring port has fallen very considerably below the assumed the normal capacity of 100 tons per hour and that it will be necessary to spend a considerable sum of money to put the plant in a state to ensure the minimum efficiency.

This is an unsolicited testimonial to the splendid facilities s of the port and incidentally to the enterprise of the Alexandra Docks Company in providing those modern improvements by which the largest vessel afloat in the dock.
