YOUNG people across Caerphilly county borough are set to benefit from a new online health and wellbeing programme.

The Health and Wellbeing Resource is being launched by the council's youth service and has been developed by Public Health Wales experts, with backing from youth services in Wales.

Youth Workers and all those who work with young people will be able to use the resource to help deliver major public health messages to young people in the county borough.

Practical information and lesson plans for schools will be available on issues such as food and fitness, emotional wellbeing, sexual health, smoking, alcohol, drugs, and immunisation.

The resource was designed initially to be used in youth work settings, but teachers and school staff can access it to help them discuss these topics on a daily basis with young people. In turn, the information available will support young people to make the best decisions to improve their health.

The resource will be constantly updated, in order that crucial health-related information is accurate.

"Youth Workers and others are well placed to reinforce important health messages at times and places that have the maximum positive impact on young people and their well-being, and this resource helps take us one step further in making this happen,” said Cllr Philippa Marsden, Caerphilly council’s cabinet member for education and achievement.

Mererid Bowley, consultant at Public Health Wales, said: “This resource will provide easily accessible information for those who deliver health education to children and young people across Gwent.

"It offers those who deliver health education the opportunity to encourage young people to take responsibility for their health and to reduce risky behaviours.”
