SCHOOLCHILDREN from Newport lent a helping hand to those not quite as tech-savvy as themselves this week.

Pupils from Eveswell Primary in Maindee made the short trip to St John’s Church to help the elderly members of the congregation to get online and combat loneliness.

The visit is part of a the school’s participation in the Digital Heroes scheme and has seen the children teaching members of the older generation about internet safety, staying in touch with relatives through social media and email and general tech use.

Jodi Webb-Clements, who has been leading the Digital Heroes project at Eveswell, said: “We are so proud of our digital heroes and all they have achieved.

“The work they have done in the community has made a real difference to some of the local elderly residents.”

The pupils have also had to produce a two-minute video to demonstrate how they’ve put their digital volunteering skills into practice.

Their video was published on the Digital Communities Wales website and, following a public vote, the winners will be announced.

Digital Communities Wales is a Welsh Government funded project which brings older and younger people together.
