A PAIR of TWO veterinary nurses are taking on a four-day trek through Iceland’s varied environments to raise money for a Welsh cancer charity.

Sophie Thomas, from Ynysddu, and Claire Ashworth, from Penarth, have signed up to hike 68km over varied terrain, walking an average of 24km each day.

“We have signed up to be part of the Fire and Ice Expedition through Cancer Research Wales who organise this with JT expeditions,” said Miss Thomas.

“Cancer Research Wales is a relatively small charity and they rely solely on donations and fundraisers like Claire and me.

“Their research has sped up the diagnosis process of cancer in Wales meaning people are diagnosed much quicker and treated quicker. This cuts out months of going back and forth to GPs until eventually getting a diagnosis.

“They have also done endless amounts of research into the alternative treatments.”

The pair will take on the challenge, from September 2-6, as part of a small group and will camp at different sites along the way.

“We will be walking through volcanic land and glaciers,” said Miss Thomas.

The challenge in itself was a draw to Miss Thomas and Mrs Ashworth.

However, it was not the only reason for taking on the walk.

“I’m not doing this for any one person in particular. I am doing this for everyone,” said Mrs Ashworth.

“Our loved ones – both lost and still fighting, to raise awareness and strive towards a cancer free future for us all.”

The pair have set up an online fundraising page and will also be raising funds in a number of other ways.

“We will be organising bucket collections at stores,” said Miss Thomas.

“We will also have a collection pot attached to our bag when we are out on training walks.”
