ARMED police were called the grounds of a Caerphilly county borough school last night following reports of a man carrying a knife - but police have since said this was a false alarm.

A search of Blackwood Comprehensive School's grounds was carried out around 8pm, with specialist officers, including those with firearms, a dog section, and a police helicopter all attending.

It came after a man was thought to have been seen carrying a knife close to the Cefn Road area.

But police today said officers located a person who matched the description given. Investigations revealed he had a mobile phone though, which seemed to have been mistaken for a knife.

In a statement, Gwent Police said: "Officers are treating this as a report made in good faith and we are no longer treating this as a suspicious incident."
